Manganese ore purification technology
Manganese is a common metallic mineral found in nature. Over 150 species of manganese minerals have been discovered to date, but only a small fraction are valuable for mining and utilization. These ores primarily include pyrolusite, psilomelane, and sludge. Based on the different manganese ore purification technologies and methods, manganese ores can be broadly divided into five categories: oxide manganese ore, carbonate manganese ore, ferromanganese ore, manganese-containing iron ore, and polymetallic composite manganese ore. Due to differences in ore deposit type and ore properties, the beneficiation process for each type of manganese ore also varies. Below, we will detail the ore characteristics of these four types of manganese ore and their purification technologies, methods, and equipment.
1. Manganese Ore Purification Technology Used in Manganese Oxide Ore Beneficiation | Manganese Ore Purification Methods: Manganese oxide ore accounts for the majority of available manganese ore. Surface manganese oxide ore often produces a large amount of sludge, which often contains a large amount of manganese minerals. Therefore, manganese ore sludge treatment is also a very important aspect. Based on this classification, and depending on the manganese content and the particle size of the mineral impregnation, it can be divided into massive impregnated manganese-rich ore, small and granular impregnated manganese-poor ore, and fine granular impregnated manganese-poor ore.

1. Manganese Ore Purification Technology for Lumpy Disseminated Manganese-Rich Ore | Manganese Ore Purification Methods: This type of manganese ore has a high manganese content and an upper limit for particle size selection between 40-75mm. Simple manganese ore beneficiation methods can be used for separation. High-grade manganese concentrate can be obtained through simple screening or gravity separation. Therefore, commonly used manganese ore beneficiation methods include heavy media beneficiation, jig beneficiation, and shaking table beneficiation. Required beneficiation equipment: Vibrating screen, jig, shaking table.
2. Manganese Ore Purification Technology for Small and Granular Disseminated Manganese-Poor Ore | Manganese Ore Purification Methods: This type of manganese ore has a low manganese content, typically less than 30%, and features small particle size and high mud content, making processing more complex. Because manganese ore itself is weakly magnetic, this type of manganese ore is currently recovered using a combined gravity-magnetic-flotation process. This involves first washing the ore to remove some manganese-containing sludge, then recovering the manganese using a combined process of jigging gravity separation, high-intensity magnetic separation, and flotation. Required beneficiation equipment: Magnetic separator, jig, flotation cell.
3. Manganese Ore Purification Technology for Fine-Grained Disseminated-Poor Manganese Ore | Manganese Ore Purification Methods: This type of manganese ore generally contains less than 15% manganese, and its particle size is very fine and uniformly distributed, making it difficult to recover using a single mechanical beneficiation method. Chemical leaching or a combined process of mechanical beneficiation and chemical leaching is typically used.
2. Manganese Ore Purification Technology Used in Carbonate Manganese Ore Beneficiation | Manganese Ore Purification Methods: Manganese minerals in carbonate manganese ore exist primarily as manganese carbonate, with a finely embedded particle size. Flotation is the primary beneficiation method for this type of manganese ore, but it can result in high metal loss and reagent consumption. Therefore, it must be combined with high-intensity magnetic separation or gravity separation in production. Required beneficiation equipment: Flotation, magnetic separator, gravity separation equipment.
3. Manganese Ore Purification Technology Used in Ferromanganese Ore Beneficiation | Manganese Ore Purification Methods: Ferromanganese ore generally contains manganese as the primary metal, with a combined manganese and iron content exceeding 30%. Compared to manganese oxide ore, ferromanganese ore is more difficult to beneficiate, particularly in separating the iron and manganese minerals. In production, a washing-jigging-gravity separation-roasting-magnetic separation process can be used to recover iron and manganese concentrates, yielding a manganese concentrate containing 5.4% iron and 46.3% manganese, with a recovery rate of 75.5%. Required mineral processing equipment: linear vibrating screen, jig, and drum ore washer.

4. Manganese Ore Purification Technology for Manganese-Containing Iron Ore Beneficiation | Manganese Ore Purification Methods: This type of ore has a low manganese content of only 5%-10%. It also features finely interwoven particles and closely intergrown iron and manganese minerals, making it difficult to recover using mechanical separation. Chemical leaching is a commonly used beneficiation method for this type of manganese ore, achieving significantly better recovery rates than traditional mechanical separation methods.
5. Manganese Ore Purification Technology for Polymetallic Composite Manganese Ore Beneficiation | Manganese Ore Purification Methods: In addition to manganese, polymetallic composite manganese ores also contain a certain amount of iron, lead, zinc, magnesium, aluminum, copper, and silver, mostly in the form of oxides. Manganese is tightly bound to silver, iron, and other minerals, making it difficult to separate. For this type of ore, separation methods such as high-intensity magnetic separation, gravity separation, and flotation can be used. The manganese ore is first washed and screened to remove the sludge, and then sorted for other recoverable minerals. Required mineral processing equipment: vibrating screen, XCF flotation machine, magnetic drum, ore washing machine.

Manganese ore is characterized by a high concentration of lean or impure ore. Most manganese ores require beneficiation to produce high-quality commercial-grade concentrate. However, since most manganese ores are fine-grained or micro-grained and contain considerable amounts of high-phosphate and high-iron ores and associated beneficial metals, beneficiation processing presents significant challenges. Currently, commonly used manganese ore purification technologies and methods include mechanical separation (including washing, screening, gravity separation, high-intensity magnetic separation, and flotation), pyrometallurgical concentration, and chemical beneficiation.
1. Manganese Ore Purification Technologies and Methods - Washing and Screening: Washing involves the use of water or mechanical scrubbing to separate ore from mud. Commonly used equipment includes screen washers, drum washers, and trough washers. Washing is often combined with screening, such as direct washing on a vibrating screen or screening the sand ore removed from the washer. Screening can also be used as a standalone operation to separate products of varying particle sizes and grades for various applications. Washing and screening operations can not only improve the grade of the selected ore, but also significantly improve the smooth progress of subsequent operations.

2. Manganese Ore Purification Technology | Manganese Ore Purification Methods - Gravity Separation: Currently, gravity separation can only be used to separate manganese ores with simple structures and coarse interpenetration. It is particularly suitable for dense manganese oxide ores. Common methods include heavy medium separation, jigging, chutes, shaking tables, and centrifuges. The conventional process for processing manganese oxide ore is to crush the ore to a particle size of -10mm or -5mm using a jaw crusher or high-pressure roller mill. The coarse fraction is then sorted by jigging, and the fine fraction is sent to a chute, shaking table, or centrifuge for separation.
3. Manganese Ore Purification Technology | Manganese Ore Purification Methods - High-Intensity Magnetic Separation: Manganese ore belongs to the iron family and is weakly magnetic. Although there are many ore types, the basic separation method is similar to that of weakly magnetic iron oxide. Manganese can be recovered in a high-magnetic field separator with a magnetic field strength of 10,000-20,000 GS (Oe), generally increasing the grade of the manganese concentrate by 4-15%. Because high-intensity magnetic separation is simple to operate, easy to control in production, has strong adaptability and is beneficial to environmental protection, it can be used for the separation of various manganese ores. In recent years, it has occupied a dominant position in manganese ore beneficiation, and various new types of coarse, medium and fine particle high-intensity magnetic separators have been successfully developed.

4. Manganese Ore Purification Technology | Manganese Ore Purification Methods - Gravity Separation + Magnetic Separation: The gravity separation + magnetic separation process primarily processes leached manganese oxide ore. The raw ore is crushed to a particle size of -10mm, then screened and graded by washing. Coarse particles of 3-30mm are then washed and jig-separated to produce high-quality manganese concentrate. Gravity separation tailings and washed ore less than 3mm are ground to a fineness of -1mm, and then separated into fine, qualified manganese concentrate using high-intensity magnetic rollers or vertical ring high-gradient magnetic separators. Alternatively, spiral chutes or centrifuges can be used to separate fine-grained manganese concentrate.
5. Manganese Ore Purification Technology | Manganese Ore Purification Methods - High-Intensity Magnetic Separation + Flotation: The high-intensity magnetic separation + flotation process is primarily used for low-manganese, low-phosphorus, high-iron manganese ores, primarily composed of manganese carbonate. A combined process of jaw crusher, rod mill, ball mill, grinding, vertical ring high-gradient magnetic separator or high-intensity magnetic roller separation, and flotation is generally used to achieve excellent beneficiation performance.

6. Manganese Ore Purification Technology | Manganese Ore Purification Methods - Pyrometallurgical Enrichment: Pyrometallurgical enrichment of manganese ore is a separation method for processing high-phosphorus, high-iron, and difficult-to-separate, low-manganese ore, commonly known as the manganese-enriched slag method. Essentially, it utilizes the different reduction temperatures of manganese, phosphorus, and iron to selectively separate these three elements by controlling the temperature in a blast furnace or electric furnace. Pyrometallurgical enrichment offers a simple process and stable production. It effectively removes iron and phosphorus from the ore, producing a manganese-rich, low-iron, and low-phosphorus manganese-rich slag, a high-quality raw material for manganese alloys. Therefore, pyrometallurgical enrichment is a promising beneficiation method for difficult-to-separate ores with high phosphorus, high iron, and low manganese content.
7. Manganese Ore Purification Technology | Manganese Ore Purification Methods - Chemical Manganese Separation: Extensive research and experimentation has been conducted on chemical manganese beneficiation. The most promising and applied methods include the dithionite method, the hausmannite method, and the bacterial manganese leaching method.

Manganese Ore Purification Technology | Manganese Ore Purification Methods - Jigging is a method of purifying manganese ore using gravity separation based on the specific gravity difference between the ore and the gangue. Most manganese ore has a coarse-grained ore structure, with a clear boundary and specific gravity difference between the manganese ore and the gangue, making it well-suited for gravity separation and purification. Jigging can separate coarse, medium, and fine-grained manganese ore, and offers high processing capacity, high recovery rates, and excellent beneficiation performance, without causing any environmental pollution. It is currently the simplest manganese ore beneficiation equipment, with low investment and low production costs, making it the most economical manganese ore beneficiation equipment. Jigging utilizes circulating water, requiring only regular replenishment of water. It has low water quality requirements and is environmentally friendly, making it the most environmentally friendly manganese ore beneficiation equipment. Therefore, jigs are considered the most ideal manganese ore beneficiation method.
Manganese Ore Purification Technology | Manganese Ore Purification Methods - High-Intensity Magnetic Separator Methods for Purifying Manganese Ore: A high-intensity magnetic separator is a separator with a relatively high magnetic field strength. For weakly magnetic ores like manganese ore, manganese minerals begin to be adsorbed when the magnetic field strength reaches 12,000 gauss. Ideal manganese ore magnetic separation performance can be achieved when the magnetic field strength reaches 15,000 gauss or above. High-intensity magnetic separators for manganese ore are primarily used for the beneficiation and purification of medium- and fine-grained manganese ore, and are often used in manganese ore concentrators in waterless or water-scarce areas. Due to their small processing capacity, manganese ore magnetic separators are generally not suitable for direct beneficiation of large manganese ores. They are often used in conjunction with jigs to improve the recovery rate of fine-grained manganese ore in the gravity separation process.
In summary, we can see that due to the unique properties of manganese ore, ore slimes also contain a large amount of manganese minerals, making them a crucial component of manganese recovery. Therefore, when developing manganese ore purification technology and methods, particular attention must be paid to ore slime recovery to ensure the desired manganese mineral recovery rate. It is recommended that mine owners consult with a manufacturer with comprehensive beneficiation plant qualifications. Based on scientific beneficiation test reports, they can select a suitable manganese ore beneficiation process flow and tailor-make their own manganese ore beneficiation equipment to ensure optimal recovery efficiency.
The selection of manganese ore purification technology and methods depends on the specific properties and interbedded structure of the ore, as well as the actual needs of the beneficiation plant. To ensure the efficient operation of manganese ore beneficiation equipment, Forui Machinery has developed a small-scale manganese ore beneficiation test platform capable of conducting small-scale gravity separation and magnetic separation tests on various manganese ores, and designing manganese ore beneficiation process flows.
